The gap it closes

The thing this shelf sells back to you is a phone. “Mobile version” is a bullet inside the incumbent’s $5.58-a-month tier, and three of its low-star reviews are that and nothing else: “I did a nicer review some minutes ago, but now I have come to realize the MOBILE VERSION is NOT FREE. In a mobile-first world, it’s really unpolite to find out the app that has a ‘free trial’ doesnt tell you at least ‘Hey! The mobile version is pay to use!’ Had to scroll aaaall the way down to find out that ‘little, unimportant detail’” · “their apps don’t work on mobile!!! It’s not mentioned anywhere before the purchase … It turns the mobile version into such a mess!!!” (2 votes) · “Tooltip is not on the mobile version”. Here a hint opens when a pointer passes over it and when a visitor taps it, on every plan, and that will never change.

The free tier next door is a demonstration, and its own reviewers say so. “POINTLESS — The free version has one animation option and its barely customisable”, against a paid ladder of $4.18, $5.58 and $6.98 a month for the other sixty effects. The single most-voted review on the whole shelf is about the trial that follows: “I am glad I saw the little ‘free trial ends in 14 days’ — Don’t waste your time using the app unless you are sure you want to purchase” (12 votes). Thirty-four effects here, and every one of them is on the free plan, with every design control beside it.

One of them prints its own name on the customer’s website and charges to take it off. “So how the heck do you remove the text???!! It might be a decent choice but the splash text is still present... Please don’t tell me that you have to prescribe to extortion for use.” Nothing this app draws ever carries our name. No badge, no watermark, no splash, on any plan, ever.

And a lapsed subscription took somebody’s work off their live site without telling them. “The subscription turned into the cheapest one and my effects disappeared from the published site, which I only found out by someone pointing it out” (1★, 2 votes). A plan here may take away an enhancement and may never take away a thing a visitor can see: a site whose Pro ends keeps every spot, every effect and every word, keeps its extra looks in the dashboard, and simply draws them all with the first one.

Both rivals with any reviews at all are accused of being slow. “they work so slowly I have to remove all the effects, as my potential employers complained about UX crashing and loading for ages” · “Impressive but takes too long to load” · and next door, measured by its own reviewer, eight to ten seconds of page load with eleven of its elements on a page. One of them sells “over 600 fully customizable icons”. This app makes one request per placement and fetches nothing from anybody else — no font service, no icon library, no tracker — and its eight glyphs are drawn from a string.

A tooltip that hangs off the edge of the screen is the one piece of arithmetic on this shelf, and nobody does it. Every rival opens its panel on a fixed side at a fixed offset, so a word near the right-hand edge opens a hint that hangs off it. This one works out which side it actually has room on — never a constant, because the same word wants above for a short hint and below for a tall one — clamps the panel inside the screen, and then moves its own pointer so it still aims at the word it belongs to.

How it works

Four steps, then it runs itself.

  1. 01

    Make a spot

A spot is a button, a hint or a picture. Give it its words, pick one of thirty-four effects, add a link if it needs one. A new install opens on six working samples — two of each — that you rename in a minute.

  2. 02

    Set the look once

Colour, text size, corners, padding, speed and how it moves, named as a style set. Every placement using that set follows it, so changing your accent colour changes every button on the site at the same time. The incumbent’s most practical reviewer asks for exactly this: “Would like the options to add to pages all at once and to pre program features so I need not to manually select on every page.”

  3. 03

Drop it wherever you want it

Drag it in from Add Elements → App Widgets, as many times as you like, on as many pages as you like. Nothing is added to your site on its own and no page is ever created for you. Each placement picks which spot it draws and where it sits.

  4. 04

And it works under a thumb

A hint opens on a tap, closes on a tap outside or on Escape, and is placed so it never hangs off the edge of a phone screen. A pointer opens it by hovering; a finger opens it by pressing. Both on every plan.

How it behaves

The decisions that matter.

  • Every effect is on every plan

Twelve for buttons, fourteen for pictures, eight for the way a hint arrives — thirty-four, and not one of them is behind a price. There is no “effects” limit in this app’s plan code, and the function anything would have to call to hold one back has nowhere to put a plan.

  • It opens on a tap, and that is not a feature

On a phone there is no such thing as hovering, so a hint that only answers a pointer is a hint half the web cannot read. The press is wired unconditionally: there is no plan check anywhere in the code that opens a hint.

  • No badge, no watermark, no splash, on any plan, ever

Nothing this app draws on your site carries our name in any form. The test suite greps the whole source tree for one.

  • If a subscription ends, nothing disappears from your site

A plan may take away an enhancement; it may never take away something a visitor can see. Extra looks are kept and every spot draws with the first one; alternative wordings fall back to the wording already on the spot; a picture inside a hint comes off and the hint keeps its sentence.

  • It never receives an upload and never stores a picture

A picture is an address you already have, on your own media host. There is no upload path in this app at all, so there is nothing here of yours to lose.

  • One request per placement, and nothing from anybody else

No font service, no icon sprite, no content delivery network, no analytics. Measured on a published page: changing three settings at once still made exactly one call.

  • It is not points on a photograph

A picture here wears one treatment over the whole of itself. There is no coordinate anywhere in this app to put a point at — that is our Image Hotspots & Labels, which is a different object.

Pricing

Free tier that actually works.

Billed per site through the Wix App Market, monthly or yearly (yearly saves 20%). Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial. The free plan is deliberately functional and never expires, so the app can prove itself on a real site before you pay for it.

Free

$0

Every effect on buttons, hints and pictures; hints that open on a tap as well as on hover; every colour, size, corner, padding, speed and easing; links, glyphs and captions; one style set, no cap on spots — and no badge or watermark on anything.

Pro

$9.99/mo

or $95.88/yr

A style set for every page or section instead of the one a free site gets; the wording of a hint written per language, each page taking the one that matches it; a picture inside a hint; and a count of how often visitors open each spot

Business

$19.99/mo

or $191.88/yr

Everything in Pro, plus thirty days of opens day by day, every spot in and out as a spreadsheet, a style set copied straight onto another site, and a record of every change made to any of them

Documentation & data handling

Everything it touches, stated plainly.

Installing & getting started

  1. Add Hover Effects & Tooltips to your Wix site from the App Market and approve the permissions listed below.
  2. Open it from your site dashboard under Apps. It adds the A site widget (custom element) you place yourself — nothing is auto-added / A settings panel on every placement, in Wix Studio, the classic Wix Editor and Wix Harmony / A dashboard page for your spots, your style sets, your counts and your spreadsheet.
  3. Follow the four steps above. The free tier covers every effect on buttons, hints and pictures; hints that open on a tap as well as on hover; every colour, size, corner, padding, speed and easing; links, glyphs and captions; one style set, no cap on spots — and no badge or watermark on anything., so you can prove it works before paying.
  4. Stuck? Email [email protected] — two business days response.

Permissions, and why each one

Read site, business, and email details
To read which plan your site is on, so the paid features unlock. That is the whole install screen. It asks for no access to your contacts, your members, your media or your store, because it does not need any of them.

What is stored, and where

  • Your spots and your style sets live in your own site’s data, in collections this app creates. Nothing of yours leaves your site.
  • Nothing is ever uploaded to this app. A picture is an address you already have; the app stores the address, never the file.
  • Counting, on Pro and above, writes one row per open with a date on it and nothing about the person — no visitor id, no address, no country, no session, no referrer. There is nowhere on that row to put one.
  • Your own presses are never counted, so checking your own page does not make you your busiest visitor.
  • The counts and the change record reach back four hundred days, which the dashboard says in words rather than implying for ever.

Questions people ask.

Do the effects really all work on the free plan?

Yes — all thirty-four. Twelve button treatments, fourteen picture treatments and eight ways a hint can arrive, with every design control beside them. The app this replaces gives away two image effects, two button effects and one tooltip effect and sells the rest across three tiers; the rival beside it has no free plan at all.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, on every plan, and this is the reason the app exists. A hint opens when a visitor taps it, closes on a tap outside or on Escape, and is placed so it never hangs off the edge of the screen. On the incumbent, “Mobile version” is a bullet inside a $5.58-a-month tier.

Will it put your name on my website?

No. No badge, no watermark, no splash, on any plan, ever. A reviewer of the app next door writes: “So how the heck do you remove the text???!! … the splash text is still present... Please don’t tell me that you have to prescribe to extortion for use.”

What happens if I stop paying?

Nothing disappears from your site. Every spot keeps drawing, with every effect and every word. Your extra style sets stay in the dashboard and every spot draws with the first one; alternative wordings fall back to the wording already on the spot. A 1★ review on the incumbent is the opposite: “The subscription turned into the cheapest one and my effects disappeared from the published site, which I only found out by someone pointing it out.”

Will it slow my page down?

One request per placement and nothing from anybody else — no font service, no icon library, no tracker, no content delivery network. The effects are stylesheet rules and the eight glyphs are drawn from a string. Both rivals with reviews are accused of slowness; one has a reviewer measuring eight to ten seconds of page load with eleven of its elements on a page.

Can I have a hint in more than one language?

Yes, on Pro. Type the wording for each language and every page gets the one that matches its own — including an unfinished translation, where each field falls back on its own rather than the whole wording being dropped. Three of the incumbent’s low-star reviews are this, and one of them is a cancellation: “il manque une option multilingue pour la version anglaise de mon site. Je ne peux donc pas la conserver.”

Do I have to set each one up again on every page?

No. The look belongs to a named style set, so changing your accent colour changes every button on the site at once. On Business, every spot goes in and out as a spreadsheet, which is how a site with eighty hints on it gets translated.

How is this different from your Image Hotspots & Labels?

Image Hotspots puts points on a photograph, each with its own position and its own panel. This puts one treatment over a whole picture, a treatment on a button, and a hint on a word. There is no coordinate anywhere in this app.

Can I upload my pictures to it?

No, deliberately. A picture is an address you already have on your own media host, and the app stores the address. The worst review on this shelf is “Stay away! — the hotspot app stopped working on the client’s site and all the data disappeared”. Nothing is ever uploaded here, so nothing can be lost here.

Does it work on Wix Studio?

Yes. It is a custom element, so it runs on Wix Studio, the classic Wix Editor and Wix Harmony — the same app and the same settings panel. Verified on a published Wix Studio page and on a published classic Wix page, both with the widget placed by hand.

What does it ask permission for?

One thing: which plan your site is on, so the paid features unlock. That is the whole install screen. It asks for no access to your contacts, your members, your media or your store, because it does not need any of them.
