The gap it closes
Wix File Share sits at 3.1★ across 460 reviews, and two of its highest-voted complaints say the same thing thirteen times over: “Website viewers require a login to see files. There is no way to share files publicly, cant publically host pdfs” (7 votes) and “I want to be able to share documents with the public and they can’t open them without having to sign up for an account” (6 votes). A downloads page that demands an account is not a downloads page.
Behind those sit the structural ones — “More than 100 folders the app crashes” (5 votes) and “No Longer Working on Cell Phones” — and, worst of all, the private-folder failures: one 2026 review describes a client uploading private documents into another client’s private folder. That is not a bug to compete with; it is a promise nobody in this category keeps.
Downloads & Document Library answers the public ones and refuses the private one. Any visitor opens any file with no account and no sign-in. Folders go as deep as you like with a breadcrumb trail. It reads on a phone because it detects the phone layout rather than guessing from the window. And there are no per-member private folders, and there never will be — members-only is the whole library or none of it, checked on our server before a single file is sent.

Add your files
Choose them from your own Wix Media Manager, several at a time, or paste a link to anything you already have online. Each one gets a title, a description, a folder path and its own share link. Replace a file and the old copy is kept as a previous version.

Arrange it
Cards, a plain list, a sortable table, or nothing but a row of download buttons. Columns, spacing, corners, text size and accent colour are yours, folders show as buttons or as a drill-down, and every visitor-facing word is a field you can rewrite for another language or your own voice.

Put it on any page
Drag the element in as many times as you like, and pin a placement to one folder or cap how many it shows. It works the same way in Wix Studio, the classic Wix Editor and Wix Harmony.

No sign-in, ever, for any visitor
Nothing here asks a visitor for anything: no account, no sign-up, no email box, no “register to download”. This is the complaint the app it replaces is made of, and it is free.

Every arrangement and every design control is free
Four arrangements, folders, search, sorting, download counts, previews, share links and CSV export are all on the free plan. The rival’s free plan has most of them; selling them back would read worse than the app it replaces.

It creates no pages
A file opens in a panel over the page you are already on, addressable by its own link. Nothing joins your menu, no dynamic pages are built, and nothing can turn into a broken link. The app is never added to a page on its own either.

No per-member private folders — deliberately
A folder private to one member is the feature that goes wrong in every app in this corner of the market, and getting it wrong means somebody reads a document that was not theirs. Members-only here is the whole library, all of it or none of it.

Open-only hides a button, it is not copy protection
A file can be shown without a download button. That is a tidiness switch, and the app says so rather than implying the file cannot be saved.

Installing & getting started
- Add Downloads & Document Library to your Wix site from the App Market and approve the permissions listed below.
- Open it from your site dashboard under Apps. It adds the Downloads element (editor widget, any page, any number of times) / Dashboard page.
- Follow the three steps above. The free tier covers fifteen files any visitor can open without signing in, folders as deep as you like with search and sorting, all four arrangements and every design control, the file view with previews and a link straight to it, download counts, and CSV export, so you can prove it works before paying.

Permissions, and why each one

What is stored, and where
- Your libraries, files and settings are stored in collections inside your own site.
- Your files stay in your own Wix Media Manager. The app stores the address and the words around it, never a copy.
- If you switch download counting on, the app writes one row per download naming only the file. No name, email, address, cookie or other visitor identifier is stored with it, and nothing is written to the visitor’s browser.
- Uninstalling removes the app’s collections. Your files are untouched — they were never ours.

Questions people ask.
Do visitors need an account to download a file?
No. That is the whole point of the app. Any visitor opens and downloads any file with no account, no sign-up and no sign-in — on the free plan and every plan above it.
Can I keep a folder private to one member?
No, and it never pretends to. Per-member private folders are what goes wrong in this category, and getting them wrong means somebody reads a document that was not theirs. On Business the whole library can be members-only — all of it or none of it — and that is checked on our server before any file is sent.
Does it work on Wix Studio?
Yes. It is a custom element, so it runs on Wix Studio, the classic Wix Editor and Wix Harmony — the same app, the same settings panel.
What happens when I replace a file?
On Pro and Business the old copy is kept as a previous version, listed under the new one with its date and size, so an old link in an email still resolves to something.
